Mazda Electric Car MX-30 SUV Reviews: Specs and Pricing 2024

Mazda electric car MX 30 EV

The 2023 Perfect Mazda Electric Car MX-30’s limited driving range is reminiscent of the early days of the Nissan Leaf. Unfortunately, this hampers the appeal of this stylish crossover. Most of its competitors offer over 200 miles per charge and even outperform the MX-30 in acceleration. However, the Mazda does have its redeeming qualities, including its eco-friendly interior, sleek coupe-like styling, and competitive starting price. In fact, it undercuts rivals like the Kia Niro EV and the Volkswagen ID.4 by approximately $5000.

Although the MX-30 is available only in limited quantities and exclusively in California, it caters to drivers who primarily stay close to home. Nonetheless, the MX-30’s short-lived presence in the expanding market of highly competitive electric vehicles is understandable.

Although there are no updates for the Mazda Electric Car MX-30 EV in 2023, Mazda has recently shared that this year will serve as its farewell. Instead, the CX-30 will continue its global presence, now with an R-EV range-extender variant. This new iteration features a rotary engine designed to recharge the battery, ensuring sustained performance.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The MX-30, an all-electric vehicle, is equipped with a single 143-hp electric motor that powers its front wheels. Unfortunately, all-wheel drive capability is not available for the current model. However, it’s worth noting that a plug-in hybrid version is expected to be introduced in the near future. This variant will feature a combination of an electric motor and a rotary gasoline engine, potentially offering the option for all-wheel drive.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The Mazda Electric Car 2023 MX-30 features a relatively small 30.0-kWh battery pack compared to other electric vehicles. According to EPA estimates, its driving range per charge is expected to be around 100 miles, which is less than half of what the Bolt and the Kona Electric offer. However, the MX-30’s battery is versatile and can be charged using standard AC power as well as modern and faster DC chargers.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The MX-30 offers a digital panel for climate controls and vehicle settings, complemented by a secondary 8.8-inch dashboard display. This extra screen handles infotainment features like the audio system, navigation, and backup camera. Mazda’s cutting-edge infotainment interface, previously introduced in the 3 sedan and hatchback, provides seamless connectivity with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

According to the EPA, the MX-30 achieves a city fuel efficiency of 98 MPGe, a highway efficiency of 85 MPGe, and a combined efficiency of 92 MPGe. In contrast, other electric vehicles like the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Chevrolet Bolt EV boast higher ratings of 120 and 119 MPGe combined, respectively. During our own fuel economy test on a 75-mph highway route, the Mazda Electric Car MX-30 disappointingly returned only 76 MPGe. For detailed information regarding the MX-30’s fuel economy, please refer to the EPA’s official website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The cabin of the MX-30 boasts a harmonious blend of natural and sustainable materials like cork and breathable fabric upholstery derived from recycled plastic bottles. While there is ample room in the front seats to accommodate two adults comfortably, the rear seat falls short in providing generous headroom and legroom. Keeping up with the trends, the MX-30 features a floating center console that cleverly creates space for storage, concealed behind an innovative digitized screen that controls the car’s climate-control system.

Mazda has thoughtfully equipped the MX-30 with a range of desirable features as standard, including heated front seats, a 7.0-inch digital gauge display, a power sunroof, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Although the cargo space behind the MX-30’s rear seats is not exceptionally generous, a trip to Costco might warrant folding the rear seats down for more room.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
